Syd’s Escape Diary 15.01.2009

We’ve left Fairbridge for the final time with a few tearful farewells to new found friends.

Arrived back at Fremantle YHA at lunchtime and 3 choices for afternoon activities – the train into Perth, free time in Freo or simply catch up on some sleep at YHA.

We spent today exploring Fremantle – the markets, shops, beaches, street entertainers and museums giving something of interest to everyone.

Most of the buildings date from the 18th century and the whole place has a bit of a Wild West feel to it.

A free shuttle bus runs around the whole town at 10 minute intervals.

After the day at leisure the whole UK contingent met up for the first time back at the Freo YHA and then all 38 of us went off for dinner down by the fishing harbour.

The restaurant just about coped with our party – thanks to Moose, Ian, Janet and Charly doing a great job as waiters and waitresses and then off to the neighbouring ice cream parlour for dessert.

Then back to the YHA to start packing ready for our departure to Escape tomorrow.

We’ve arrived in Western Australia after a 5 hour flight from Sydney – there is also a 2 hour time difference so we are now 9 hours ahead of the UK.

We were met at Perth Airport by Jason, Brian and Tiny of the Escape organising team and they bussed us down to Fremantle (about 40 minutes) to our home for the next 2 nights at Freemantle YHA.

The weather is even hotter here – 37 degrees – so ever more important to ‘slip, slap, slop’ – after the evening meal the ‘Freemantle Doctor’ cooling breeze came in from the sea.
